A plastic garden is nothing more than a container for vegetables.
It’s just a container to hold all the necessary plants and herbs, and it’s great for growing your own food.
But how to get started building your own?
A few tips to get you started.
What you’ll need: A large plastic container with a lid.
Plastic garden equipment that is at least 3 inches tall.
Plastic containers that are at least 1-1/2 inches wide and no wider than 3 inches deep.
Plastic or plastic-tipped gardening knives.
Some type of plastic fence.
How to start building a plastic garden: Take the lid off of your plastic container.
Using a knife or an awl, cut through the plastic to make a hole.
Pour some water into the hole and leave the plastic lid in place for now.
Set your garden container on top of a metal table, like a countertop or kitchen table.
Add a plastic fence around the perimeter of the garden container, with a few inches of soil between the fence and the container.
Cover the fence with a plastic lid.
If you’re using a garden container with holes on the outside, make sure you leave enough space between the lid and the garden pot so the garden doesn’t fall out.
Let the garden grow for about a week.
Then remove the lid, add some soil, and plant the plants in the garden.
This process can take a couple of weeks, but if you plant your vegetables before you remove the plastic fence, you’ll have more time to finish the garden when the soil dries out.
How you can help: Use a plastic fencing system, as it reduces the chances of water getting into your garden, says Sharon Lebron, a garden educator at St. Mary’s University in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Plastic fencing also prevents pests from damaging the plants.
But plastic containers are so heavy, you should only use one of each kind for the garden containers, she says.
You can also build your plastic garden using a saw.
You could build a 3-by-3-foot container, or a 1-by 5-foot one.
This will make it easy to keep track of how much space each container takes up.
If there’s a gap between the top of the container and the top edge of the fence, it’s usually the right size to fill with soil.
Keep a tally of the size of the gaps.
If it’s too big, it won’t grow as much, Lebonsons.
And it will be easier to see if it’s a problem if you look through the holes in the fence when the container is empty, she adds.
How much soil to use: Use an exact match to determine what size of soil to put in each container.
For example, if you want a 5-gallon container, the best ratio would be one 1/4-inch-thick layer of soil.
For a 10-gallons container, use a 10/2-inch layer of potting soil.
The best ratio for a 12-gallos container is 1/2 inch of soil per inch of height, or one inch of pot material per inch.
You should fill each container with about 1/3 of the amount of soil it’s going to take.
How long it will take: If you want to plant your vegetable garden outdoors, Lebsons says the best time to plant is about 1-2 weeks.
But you’ll want to plan ahead.
Lebrons says plastic garden containers should be placed on top if you plan to keep the soil moist.
If the container has no lid, plant them in the ground.
You might want to leave a little soil at the bottom of the containers so you can plant the next day.
How do you prevent pests from growing?
Lebionds says plastic containers can get moldy if left open too long.
“If the containers are left open for a month or more, the plastic can start to rot, Lebieson says.
If your containers are placed in an area where there’s mold, LeBron says, “it can be very hard to eradicate the mold.”
